Magic in Changeling: Chattanooga
This game uses a simplified approach to the changeling magic
found in the sourcebook. This approach is less specific than, but not
contradictory to, the sourcebook description. Use this method to cast your
cantrips.
1.
At character creation, buy dots in your Arts
(schools of magic) and Realms (areas of magical expertise).
2.
When you get ready to cast a cantrip, you can
use one from the book or make one up on the fly. Either way, add up your dots
from the relevant Attribute, Art, and Realm. For instance, if you want to make
a satyr hungry enough to go outside to the ice cream truck, you might cast a
cantrip you quickly made up called Need Ice Cream Now. Use your Manipulation,
the Art of Primal (for hunger), and the Realm of Fae (because he’s a fae).
3.
The DM assigns the difficulty. This fellow is
pretty hungry normally, and he is not interested in resisting, so the
difficulty is two. You need to roll at least one two. You roll six twos. You
are so successful that the satyr is still at the ice cream truck when you’re
ready to leave for the next quest. In fact, he can think of nothing but ice
cream all day!
4.
If you want to affect more than one Realm, you’ll
need to have dots in both Realms. For instance, if you want to affect a satyr
and a mortal, you’ll need to roll once (Manipulation+Primal+Fae) for the satyr
and once (Manipulation+Primal+Actor) for the human.
Note: Cantrips in Changeling are not the same as the spells
in Mage, Vampire, or any of the other White Wolf systems. You cannot cast these
spells with any of your changeling powers.
